Regenerative Thermal Oxidizer

Regenerative Thermal Oxidizer

Update for Week of June 25, 2018:

Electrical Resistance Heating (ERH) treatment system operating measures as of June 22, 2018:

  • Average subsurface temperature has risen to 28º C versus a target temperature of 87º C.
  • The ERH system has applied 907,500 kWh of the estimated 8,255,000 kWh to complete treatment.  This represents 11% of the estimated total energy necessary to complete remediation.
  • The perimeter air monitoring system has shown no TCE emissions at the perimeter of the site. The air monitoring results will be available on EPA’s website at https://cumulis.epa.gov/supercpad/cursites/csitinfo.cfm?id=0402598.
  • The estimated TCE removal to-date is 32 pounds.

During the week of June 25, 2018, you will see a drill rig at the site to replace an inoperative electrode.  This replacement should not delay the subsurface heating schedule.

Please note that you may see occasional steam from the thermal treatment unit during system operation.  This is normal water condensation caused by weather conditions, and not a release of TCE vapor.

For additional information about the ERH treatment system, please see the EPA News Release: Treatment Begins at CTS of Asheville Superfund Site (https://www.epa.gov/superfund/superfund-task-force-accomplishments#asheville).
